It is with great sadness that I learnt about the death of former UN Secretary-General Javier Pérez de Cuéllar.
An eminent Peruvian diplomat and lawyer, Mr Pérez de Cuéllar had a profound impact on the United Nations and the world, when he led the UN through the challenging times of the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall.
At a time when there is a renewed focus on the United Nation’s role in upholding peace and security, he will also be remembered for his crucial role in ending the Iran-Iraq War, as well as in securing peace accords in Cambodia and El Salvador. Throughout his life he was a formidable advocate for peace, justice, human rights and human dignity.
I convey my most sincere condolences to his family, to the Peruvian people, his colleagues at the UN and all those close to him.
Con gran tristeza me enteré de la muerte del ex secretario general de la ONU, Javier Pérez de Cuéllar.
Un eminente diplomático y abogado peruano, el Sr.Pérez de Cuéllar tuvo un profundo impacto en las Naciones Unidas y el mundo, cuando dirigió a la ONU a través de los tiempos difíciles de la Guerra Fría y la caída del Muro de Berlín.
En un momento en que hay un enfoque renovado en el papel de las Naciones Unidas en la defensa de la paz y la seguridad, también será recordado por su papel crucial en el fin de la Guerra Irán-Iraq, así como en la obtención de acuerdos de paz en Camboya y El Salvador. Durante toda su vida fue un defensor formidable de la paz, la justicia, los derechos humanos y la dignidad humana.
Transmito mis más sinceras condolencias a su familia, al pueblo peruano, a sus colegas de la ONU y a todas las personas cercanas a él.
