«First they came for … Assange» with Yanis Varoufakis, former Greek Minister of Finance, Srecko Horvat, Croatian philosopher, and Julian Assange live from the Embassy of Ecuador in London
BOZAR in Brussels is organizing a debate between former Greek Finance Minister, Yanis Varoufakis, and Croatian philosopher, Srećko Horvat, founders of the Democracy Movement in Europe (DiEM25). The subject is on the importance of devising alerts to support and endorse democracy and transparency.
As part of a globally unique event that will take place simultaneously in Berlin, Paris, Madrid, Belgrade, Naples and elsewhere, Brussels will take part in the event on the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the political asylum for Julian Assange in the Embassy of Ecuador in London.
Inspired by the famous poem written by Martin Niemöller (“When they came for …”) on the timorous attitude of German intellectuals at the time of the coming to power of the Nazis and then on the purges directed against their enemies, the event «First they came looking for… Assange” seeks to emphasize that we live in a dangerous time when anyone who opposes political and financial power can quickly become a target.
They pursued Julian Assange, Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden … Who will be next? Although the Working Group of the United Nations on Arbitrary Detention has recently published the results indicating that Julian Assange could be detained arbitrarily, even though more than 500 organizations defending human rights, law professors, former officials of the UN and Nobel Prize winners have signed a letter calling on governments of Sweden and the United Kingdom to respect the UN decision to release Assange, he still lives cloistered in the Embassy of Ecuador in London, for fear of being extradited to the United States.
