The European Data Protection Supervisor, Giovanni Buttarelli and
The Assistant Supervisor, Wojciech Wiewiórowski invite you to their presentation to media of the EDPS Annual Report 2017
Following the presentation of the European Data Protection Supervisor’s 2017 Annual Report at the European Parliament, this press conference aims to present an overview of EDPS activities in 2017 and priorities for 2018. We will also analyse the progress made in achieving the aims set out in the EDPS Strategy 2015-2019.
At the beginning of the current EDPS mandate, the EDPS adopted an ambitious Strategy, committing to lead by example in the global dialogue on data protection and privacy in the digital age. To achieve this goal, the EDPS has been closely involved with work on the reform of EU rules on data protection. With the GDPR due to apply from 25 May 2018, it is now more important than ever that complementary rules on ePrivacy and data protection in the EU institutions are finalised as soon as possible.
The EDPS also continues to play an important role in the international debate on data protection and privacy. In 2017, he contributed to discussions on the free flow of data in trade agreements and the Privacy Shield. He also continued to stress the need to find a balance between security and privacy in the processing of personal data by law enforcement authorities in the fight against terrorism. In his new role as the data protection supervisor for Europol, he aims to ensure that the EU sets an example of how this balance can be achieved.
In 2018, the EDPS is looking forward to co-hosting the International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners. He will use the occasion to inspire much-needed global and inter-disciplinary debate on digital ethics.
