The Brussels Diplomatic Academy of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel invites you to a presentation and Q&A on
President-elect Trump and perspectives for a Middle East Peace agreement
with Adel Atieh, Deputy Head of Mission, Mission of the State of Palestine to the EU
President-elect Donald Trump said recently that his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, could help make peace between the Israelis and Palestinians. Trump has spoken repeatedly of his desire to broker Middle East peace, however he has staffed his campaign and transition with sceptics of the peace process. Jason Greenblatt, the Trump team’s point person on Israel is reported as saying that “It is certainly not Mr. Trump’s view that settlement activity should be condemned and that it is an obstacle for peace – because it is not an obstacle for peace”. This use of language is significant. For three decades, American foreign policy leaders have consistently labelled Israeli settlements in the occupied territories to be exactly that: ‘Obstacles to peace’.
Adel Atieh of the Mission of the State of Palestine to the EU will consider the question ‘Will the foreign policy statements made by Trump and his aides be a total roadblock toward finding an agreement on territorial concessions and creating a contiguous Palestinian state alongside the state of Israel?’
