Dear High Representative/Vice President,
As you are aware, the political, economic, and humanitarian situation has been severely deteriorating over the past few years in Venezuela, and Venezuelans have been suffering mass violations of their human rights and democracy for far too long. The illegitimate swearing in of Nicolas Maduro on 10 January 2019 for a second term as President following a fraudulent election was one of the last of many blows to Venezuela’s democracy.
The European Union has repeatedly called for “the restoration of democracy and the rule of law in Venezuela through a credible political process”. Following the events this week, in particular the swearing in of National Assembly President Juan Guaidó as President of Venezuela, we, Members of the European Parliament, call on a swift, strong and united position from the EU and to recognise Juan Guaidó as the only legitimate President of Venezuela ad interim, until new elections can be called. We believe that the explicit recognition of President Guaidó would be a continuation of the EU’s commitment to support a peaceful and democratic solution to the crisis in Venezuela.

Como es de su conocimiento, la situación política, económica y humanitaria se ha deteriorado gravemente en los últimos años en Venezuela, y los venezolanos han estado sufriendo violaciones masivas de sus derechos humanos y su democracia durante demasiado tiempo. El juramento ilegítimo de Nicolás Maduro el 10 de enero de 2019 para un segundo mandato como presidente luego de una elección fraudulenta fue uno de los últimos golpes a la democracia de Venezuela.
La Unión Europea ha pedido en repetidas ocasiones «la restauración de la democracia y el estado de derecho en Venezuela a través de un proceso político creíble». Tras los eventos de esta semana, en particular la toma de posesión del Presidente de la Asamblea Nacional, Juan Guaidó, como Presidente de Venezuela, nosotros, los miembros del Parlamento Europeo, pedimos una posición rápida, fuerte y unida de la UE y reconocemos a Juan Guaidó como el único Presidente legítimo de Venezuela hasta el momento, hasta que se puedan convocar nuevas elecciones. Creemos que el reconocimiento explícito del Presidente Guaidó sería una continuación del compromiso de la UE de apoyar una solución pacífica y democrática a la crisis en Venezuela.
