LAUNCH OF INTERNATIONAL POLITICS AND SOCIETY MAGAZINE
with guest speaker Matthew Kaminski, Executive Editor of Politico EU
Pope Francis endorses Trump for President!; Hillary sold weapons to ISIS!; Angela Merkel announces resignation!…
…All clickbait, all false, all shared thousands of times on the internet. No wonder ‘fake news’ is getting so much attention in the mainstream press.
But false stories are hardly new. From the ‘canards’ of eighteenth-century Paris announcing the capture of bat-winged monsters in Chile, to falsified photos of World War I dogfights and bizarre conspiracies surrounding Barack Obama’s birth, misinformation and propaganda have existed since time immemorial. What’s changed is the speed and ease of dissemination.
Matthew Kaminski, Executive Editor of Politico EU, asks if fake news really is a problem and, if so, how we should deal with it.
Join us from 6pm on Thursday 21 September at the Brussels Press Club Europe, Rue Froissart 95, 1040 Brussels, for a short discussion on the issue of ‘fake news’ followed by drinks, nibbles and time for networking.
