Thanks for this invitation, thanks for this magnificent hospitality.
The ties between our two countries have always been very strong and, if anything, this war in Ukraine made them stronger.
If Putin ever thought that he could divide us, he failed. There’s no question about that.
We stand together in condemning the invasion of Ukraine, in sanctioning Russia and in helping Ukraine as President Zelensky is asking us to do.
I have to tell you that in Italy and in Europe now, people want to put an end to these massacres, to this violence, to this butchery that is happening.
People think about what we can do to bring peace.
We certainly have to use any direct/indirect channel, communication – but is that enough? What can we do?
People think, at least they want to think, about the possibility of bringing a ceasefire and starting again with some credible negotiations. That’s the situation right now.
I think that we have to think deeply on how to address this.
We will continue, you and I, to work on energy security, food security especially – which is now another issue and we’ll talk later about that, about what to do.
The other thing I will say – I don’t think we’ll discuss this later – but what happened in Ukraine is going to bring a drastic change in the European Union. We’ve always been close; now we’re going to be much closer.
I know I can count on your support as a true friend of Europe, and of Italy of course.

Los lazos entre nuestros dos países siempre han sido muy fuertes y, en todo caso, esta guerra en Ucrania los hizo más fuertes.
Si Putin alguna vez pensó que podía dividirnos, fracasó. No hay duda de eso.
Nos mantenemos unidos para condenar la invasión de Ucrania, sancionar a Rusia y ayudar a Ucrania como nos pide el presidente Zelensky.
Tengo que decirles que en Italia y en Europa ahora, la gente quiere poner fin a estas masacres, a esta violencia, a esta carnicería que está ocurriendo.
La gente piensa en lo que podemos hacer para lograr la paz.
Ciertamente tenemos que usar cualquier canal de comunicación directo/indirecto, pero ¿es eso suficiente? ¿Qué podemos hacer?
La gente piensa, al menos quiere pensar, en la posibilidad de lograr un alto el fuego y comenzar de nuevo con algunas negociaciones creíbles. Esa es la situación ahora mismo.
Creo que tenemos que pensar profundamente en cómo abordar esto.
Seguiremos, ustedes y yo, trabajando en la seguridad energética, sobre todo en la seguridad alimentaria, que ahora es otro tema y hablaremos más adelante de eso, de qué hacer.
Otra cosa que diré, no creo que lo discutamos más tarde, pero lo que sucedió en Ucrania traerá un cambio drástico en la Unión Europea. Siempre hemos sido cercanos; ahora vamos a estar mucho más cerca.
Sé que puedo contar con su apoyo como un verdadero amigo de Europa y, por supuesto, de Italia.
